Glabels - can't set object properties

I can't set object properties in glabels. Specifically, I've tried both of the 
following:

For a text object. I select Object->Create->Text. I see the box with the word 
"text" in it. I change the text to what I desire ... so far, so good. I select 
the "Style" tab and change the font size. The text object immediately 
vanishes. It's properties box is still there, but the object is nowhere to be 
found. If I click on the background (unselecting the object), it is nowhere.

For an image object: I put the object on the screen. The checkerboard pattern 
is seen. I use the browse button to put the file I want in it (in theory). The 
image object immediately vanishes. Like the description of the text object 
above, it's gone.

Is it me (I won't be surprised) or is glabels broken. I'm using Gutsy.
