disappearing desktop

The packages involved were related to Pidgin. Since I never use it I
purged the app and rebooted. No joy. No icons. Still a blank desktop
with only the wallpaper. My knotes stickies are still there, however.
Also I forgot to mention dragging icons from the drop down menu to the
desktop doesn't work anymore.
Any other ideas other than reinstalling from the backup I ran yesterday?
