  Many thanks. As noted, I have been using the terminal, just not well! 
I have been checking in with Linux every year or so to see if the 
functions I need have been developed. In the meantime, I forget things, 
like certain terminal commands. I worked around the necessity of cd by 
opening the terminal while already in the directory, using alt + F2. At 
least I didn't forget sudo! I shall consult the links you provided.
