I'd agree with the others that you should invest in more memory. Even an
additional 128MB will make a difference. For example, this is one of my
test machines:

     *-cpu
          description: CPU
          product: Pentium III (Coppermine)
          vendor: Intel Corp.
          physical id: 4
          bus info: cpu at 0
          version: 6.8.10
          slot: J3C1
          size: 1GHz

     *-memory
...
          size: 384MiB

And it works quite well with 384MB. That machine doesn't use desktop
effects and it's graphics card is as old as the hills:

           *-display UNCLAIMED

                product: 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X

This is from my laptop which I use nearly every day:
