Ensure you're running the PUEL version of Virtualbox (PUEL=Personal Use 
& Evalulation License).  The .deb file is avail from [1].

The PUEL version is the only way I was able to mount host-inserted USB 
devices...no worries if you've loaded the Virtbox from 
repositories...your settings are still saved upon upgrading to PUEL.
