Upgrading to 8.10

I have recently upgraded my Lenovo R61i from 8.04 to 8.10.

I have experienced some problems:

1. My screen brightness adjustment using the special keys does not
   work anymore.  

2. Although gdm tells me: "Password or swipe finger"
   it does not authenticate me anymore using the finger scanner.  I can
   still authenticate with my fingerprint when I log in using the
   console. So the problem is not with pam or thinkfinger.

3. Booting is slower and although I have not measured it, the system
   feels slower than it was.
