hide/remove gnome-panel?

Hi all,

I am running Intrepid 8.10 32bit using the standard gnome install. I
just got done configuring my cairo-dock and all my other eye candy and I
cannot remove the last gnome panel on top. I looked all over the forums
to find out how to do it but all the fixes are for previous versions of
Ubuntu. Basically when I kill gnome-panel, it automatically restarts
immediately. I want to be able to kill it and not have it restart but
still have it installed if possible. I read that uninstalling the
gnome-panel will break future updates.
