Out of the box it is not required - that's why there isn't one.

If you want to do 'server' type things - even as simple as turn on
file sharing, then adding a firewall doesn't hurt.

There are several choices.  All of them are 'front ends' that
configure iptables.  Pick the one that works for you.  Firestarter,
guarddog, ucf, shorewall, etc etc etc
