@Karl: From the OP:

I borrowed a serial to usb cable. I was able to print a test page by:
sudo echo "Printer Test" > /dev/ttyUSB0

@Wade: did you try to chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0 yet?  This smells like a
permission issue of some type, but the latest hal/udev/etc device
handling is all a bit mysterious to me ;)
