what you are seeing is unrelated.  what exactly are you seeing in
synaptic?  vmware?  all i see related to vmware is vmware-package and
xserver-xorg-video-vmware and xserver-xorg-video-vmware-db.  don't mess
with those!

anyway, the synaptic package manager is advanced and is for managing DEB
packages that are made for ubuntu by the community.  the add/remove
programs should be good for now.

what you installed by following the instructions in that link is
vmware's own software, not created or maintained by the ubuntu
community.  so, essentially, that won't show up in synaptic, even after
you've installed it following vmware's instructions, and can't be
removed either with synaptic.

if you want to remove it you'll need to follow vmware's instructions.

sorry, hope this is not too confusing.  you're dealing with a whole new
operating system, though ;)
