I use the ubuntu 64-bit packaged openjdk-6-*
What should be the manipulations in order to have the java plugin 
enabled in firefox?

You might want to take a look at "update-alternatives" and make 
sure the sun java plugin is set as default. Also take a look at
man update-alternatives to see how to use it.  HTH,
