Is there a more modern/mainstream/lite YP/NIS for ubuntu?

I played with YP/NIS and LDAP a while back and NIS was the easiest. But not
easy enough.
I would say for three PCs it is not worth it. Install VNC server on all and
access them remotely for admin.
