Yes, original post had a 'set |grep GREP', the implications of which
are certainly possible.

halb at honey:~$ ll /etc/alternatives/*grep*
ls: cannot access /etc/alternatives/*grep*: No such file or directory

halb at honey:~$ export | grep GREP
halb at honey:~$
