Open Office - can't enter text into Writer, can't see help

I have xubuntu version 6.06, 7.10, 8.04, 8.10, and now 9.04.
OpenOffice has worked in all of them, for me. 8.04 and 8.10, I used
both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Xubuntu.
