Open Office - can't enter text into Writer, can't see help

I have OpenOffice 2.4.1 and when I open Writer I can immediately type text,
no need to do *anything*. After I format the text as I wish I save it as
html and I can open it in Firefox and see it as I formatted it.

No "File", no "New", no "Text document", no CTRL-N. Only File -> Save As...
to save it and selecting html for type.

If you want to make a table then Table -> Insert -> Table... and continue
from there or open the Table Toolbar View -> Toolbars -> Table and use it
to create and format your table. Then save it as above.

Yes, I get that far and I click on "Templates and Documents".

Yes.

OK, I have the four icons on the left.

I'm trying to enter text into a new document! :-) I.e. what I would
have thought is the 'normal' thing to want to do. E.g. I want to
write a letter to someone, I can't see where I actually enter the text
of the letter I want to write.

If I click on New Document a white area opens up to the right of the
icons but I can't enter text into it.
