Ubuntu merchandise: USB vase

I think that this is really neat:

It is a USB-powered speaker system set in a vase. It claims that it
needs no drivers. Where can I find more information on audio-over-USB?
I did not realize that is a standard protocol (as the no drivers claim
suggests). Will my laptop (Dell Inspiron) mute this device when I plug
in the headphones? Can I route _some_ audio to this device and some
other audio to another device?
