pan0 is "Personal Area Networking Profile (PAN)" used for Bluetooth. In
inrepid if you turn off Bluetooth services
(System|Administration|Services) - 'Bluetooth device management' and
rerun 'ifconfig -a' you will not longer see pan0. If you turn it back on
(Bluetooth device management) it will reapear.
