usb thumb drives + Intrepid, mounting issues

Hola

I only seem to be able to mount usb drives that have been formatted on
another linboxen.

Anything formatted by a Mac and most usb sticks formatted by winboxen
don't even  register or appear.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution? google
diddn't really get me anywhere...
