Is it possible to manually activate an eth0 connection?

Dear Derek and everybody else

My eth0 connection at the laptop is still 'down' or 'unmanaged' ......

via 'sudo lspci' I found the following:

RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

How or where can I find such a 'syslog'? The unix terminal does not
recognise the command 'syslog'.
