dhcp will not configure eth0

Avahi is a red herring - ignore it.

Network manager doesn't store it's settings in /etc,  but if there are
entries in /etc/network/interfaces then those conflict with network
manager and can cause problems.

Make sure the only eth0 entry in that file is
# The primary network interface
auto eth0

and configure thru network manager.

Alternatively, remove network manager and install wicd (from
wicd.sourceforge.com) and try that.  Since it's a laptop I'm assuming
you'd prefer that to munging the /etc/networking/interfaces file
whenever you move it around.
