       /var is a very important set of directories that include logs and 
a host of other things. That is why your Hardy will not boot. It is 
missing some important files. So I say you need to update current Hardy 
with a LiveCD of Hardy. If this is successful then you should be able to 
boot normal and it should work ok.

    And it sounds like you are making a Terminal have permenant root 
privilege. Stop doing that as well :-)
