Upgrade from ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 problem

This may not be the answer you are looking for, but it might be the
right moment to do a full, clean, re-install of 8.10 now... :)
Get the 8.10 ISO from a friend (download and burn at their place)...
then boot from it. Mount the hard disk. Backup your home directory
somewhere if it's not on a separate filesystem (unless you don't mind
losing all your files). Then go ahead with the full re-install... and
enjoy 8.10 which is really nice.
You might, in a first step, try to UPGRADE from the 8.10 CD...
