Well, just wanted to report that VX-1000 is working in Ubuntu Hardy,
kernel 2.6.24, after I installed gspca-source and used the following
instructions to compile and install the driver this is on a AMD 64 bit
system):
$> sudo apt-get install python-xml cheese
$>wget
http://blognux.free.fr/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/binary-i386/easycam2-core.deb
$> sudo dpkg -i easycam2-core.deb
$> sudo aptitude -f install
$> wget
http://blognux.free.fr/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/binary-i386/easycam2-gtk.deb
$> sudo dpkg -i easycam2-gtk.deb
$> sudo aptitude -f install

And then by running easycam2. It detected the VX-1000 camera and
compiled and installed the driver. The GUI is a bit unpolished, and it
is not obvious from the progress bar if it has finished doing
everything. But it does say "Drivers Installé !", which I think means
drivers installed. When this string appears, just press "Forward".

These steps were followed from here:

Now, the webcam works in xatwv and in cheese. However, when I try to
"test" the webcam in Skype, I get:
Skype Xv: Xv ports available: 1
Skype XShm: XShm support enabled
Skype Xv: Using Xv port 68
Skype Xv: No suitable overlay format found

This is on K8V-M8 ASUS motherboard with onboard graphics card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. S3 Unichrome
Pro VGA Adapter (rev 01)

while using the "via" graphics driver.

Surprisingly, the video does show on the remote skype user's call! So I
cannot see/preview video on this machine, yet the video is sent to the
remote user without any problems. I have given the xvinfo outpu in the PS.

Next up, ekiga. It worked great with Ekiga. Ekiga was able to detect the
camera and video calling worked without any problem. Ekiga is 2.0.12
verion in Hardy.

>From some google search, it looks like it might be a problem with Skype
and the way they program with xv overlay support. So for now, I have
just asked my friends to get an Ekiga account. I have tried talking one
of my friends and video phone in Ekiga is working wonderfully half the
world across.

Picture quality from the VX-1000 in Ubuntu could be better though. I am
going to try with 2.6.27 next and see it the webcam works before
compiling the gspca driver for this kernel and then perhaps after
compiling it. The former case will show how well supported is the webcam
in the new kernel out of the box.

Regards.
