Why do people detest top posting so much?

That's simply unsupportable.  I have, in fact, been "attacked" for not
top-posting, to the extent that anybody here has ever been attacked for
top-posting - ie, a request to not do so in future. 

I've never seen an "attack" for top-posting - but I'll happily attack
anybody who, when asked to not top-post, proceeds to try to justify their
right to top-post at the expense of everybody else.
