Usually you can just start synaptptic from 

System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager 

and then do a quick search for "ubuntu restricted extras" and install the ones 
whose description match what you're after. If the description is lacking you 
can google the package name to see what it will add. But the restricted 
extras should do what you are after
