I had this happen on the last kernel upgrade and discovered that the restricted-extras package did not upgrade. Had to manually reinstall.

Subject: WiFi quit
On my laptop with Ubuntu 8.10 installed I was able to get the WiFi
working with ease. But a week ago it came up with no choice to use WiFi.
It works fine on wired Internet but the WiFi no longer shows up.
I have been trying to get it working using the VPN things you get
with NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0 using the proper LEAP security things
but to date it will not work. Is there something else I need to
check/fix? The WiFi does not even show up as a choice any more so
something I have forgot is needed.
