Print Languages, std.: Host-based

Well, does any one know if these new non Postscript HP printers work out of
the box with no fiddling around?  I am uncertain as to what the  "host
based" print language means in practical terms on the lowest end HP
printer.  I have a 6MP but the parallel to USB conversion cable has been
creating problems.  Used to work without a problem until something in the
print driver was "improved" and it now it does not print.
