how to find wireless networks?

Once I realized that you can both right-click AND left-click the network icon (duh), I have been having luck connecting to wireless networks that do not require a password. Unfortunately, when the networks require a password, it does not seem to take. I am quite positive that I am typing the correct password, but it seems to be getting hashed at the wrong time. Has anybody encountered a problem like that?

It is one of the few conveniences I miss from Windows, and I suspect I just haven't found it yet. When I go to System/Preferences/Network Connections and click on the Wireless tab, I can click on the Add button and enter an SSID. But I haven't found a way to auto-discover the network. Yes, I know, just ask the barista for the SSID...;)

I had problems getting this to work. Then I went to synaptic package
manager and installed the
wicd network manager in place of the ubuntu default, and from there,
no problems.
