Dotan,
AS you wanted to know why people use Gnome here are my reasons.
I use gnome from its beginning. I came from SuSe (the initiators of KDE)
where I ran Gnome (it's older than KDE). I have had some tries with KDE
but it's Windows lookalike syndrome and the condescended way users are
addressed ( look at some of the texts) was sufficient for me to stay
with Gnome.
Contrary to others I have no problems with nautilus, I don't want the
old split screens back we had with norton commander (in the old DOS
days), it is not useful but the split screen with the file tree left and
the directory contents right is.
If you want a screen like that use emelFM2 a 2-pane GTK+2 file manager
http://emelfm2.net/ but I use it seldom.

I can't comment on the difference with KDE as I always have used Gnome
(when I worked in graphic mode).
Joep
