  Well they do carry Printers for Linux systems, they just don't know
it, my HP-F335 PSC does the job for me.  Honestly it's not the retailers
who need to do the work, it's the OEM's who can stick a Penguin friendly
notice on the packaging.  The OEM's like HP who makes money off of
Linux, can port their software so it has the same functionality in Linux
as it has in Windows.  (Scan button is dead in Linux, in Windows it
launches their scanning software.)
  For newbies I recommend the Linux-HCL, so it's actually up to us to
keep it current.
