Grub not properly installing.

i haven't delved into it as much as i should... To track down a
serious bug affecting my ASUS netbook I wanted to make a bootable
image on a SD card, and kept getting "bitten" by grub not putting the
boot information where I expected.

bug with another one, but some of the last comments to 430333 are with
a grub developer. I was trying to replicate a Debian procedure which
assumed grub, in Karmic which uses grub2, and there are obviously some
differences.)
