You are right. My method would only get the active members of the list.

Given a typical 90/9/1 distribution as approximation (90% only reads, 9% 
has sent at least one email to the list, 1% is very active) it should be 
possible to get a really rough guesstimate.

I have a couple of minutes now, will post back when I have a result.
