search a computer knowing his IP

Dear sir

How can i search a computer knowing his IP in my local area network?

so i can access shared folder.

i am using Ubuntu 9.10


(shared folder on Ubuntu 9.10)

I can access them under windows XP but from Ubuntu its not present on the network and i don't know how to search by computer IP)
