how to find wireless networks?

Hi, I am trying to set up wireless networking for Ubuntu 9.04 on an HP Pavilion dv6-1053cl Entertainment Notebook PC.

Is there a tool that I can install that will help automate the process of finding nearby wireless networks? It is one of the few conveniences I miss from Windows, and I suspect I just haven't found it yet. When I go to System/Preferences/Network Connections and click on the Wireless tab, I can click on the Add button and enter an SSID. But I haven't found a way to auto-discover the network. Yes, I know, just ask the barista for the SSID...;)

Any help or pointers to documentation would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

PS. Ubuntu has been very good to me! I ditched Vista a couple months and have never looked back.
PPS. Sorry if this ended up getting double-posted...it appeared the first one got stuck in moderation.
