Perhaps you missed this:
"up as. 9.10 will only use an xorg.conf if you provide one."

*If* he has an xorg.conf file, 9.10 *will* use the file. Perhaps you
failed to read the 9.10 release notes?

The suggestion to move the file out of the way was to eliminate any
issues with an existing xorg.conf.
