Thanks to all who responded. I've come to the conclusion that all of
these people going to all of this trouble to allow me to run some old
hardware is simply not worth it. It's much simpler for me to simply
upgrade my system (actually, I've been wanting to do that for a while)
and go on from there. I'll just write this off as my first (and
hopefully, my only) bad experience with Ubuntu.
