Can one get straight to username entry at login in 9.10?

Perhaps try your hand at modifying the config files. I believe the
correct ones _may_ be /etc/gdm/custom.conf and the files in /usr/share/gdm.
$ cat /etc/gdm/custom.conf
will give you more info.
Of course, google & backup first.
