Can one get straight to username entry at login in 9.10?

That is because you are using the default Karmic login where you are
presented a list of users (like the "Home" versions of Windows).

If you run the gconftool-2 command that I posted earlier (in order to
type in both your username and password in order to login), you get a
"Login" button that you have to click (or press "enter") before typing
in your username.
