Could not calculate the upgrade -- Error Message (While doing Manual Update)

Only if you actually want to upgrade.  If you type no it will abort the 
upgrade as you have experienced.

Did you 'sudo dpkg --configure -a" and allow it to finish before before you 
tried the "sudo apt-get update" command?
