Compiz cube - no cubes in sight

The size doesn't need to be ⩾4 at all. It's only at size=4 it looks
like a cube, but it will still work. If size=3, it still flips, but it
looks like a triangle from above. If size=2, it's more like flipping a
wall or a paper or something. But it still works.

If you set size to, let's say 4×4, then you will have 4 different
cubes. To switch to another cube, use the Expo plugin. I think the
standard keyboard shortcut for it is Super+e or Ctrl+Alt+e or
something like that. I changed it to Ctrl+Alt+↓ on my system, which I
think make sense, since I use Ctrl+Alt+← and Ctrl+Alt+→ respectively
for flipping the cube.
