The next release of Ubuntu (lucid 10.04) will include PiTiVi by default.
You may want to go ahead and give that a try:

$ sudo apt-get install pitivi

You'll then find it in Applications|Sound...|PiTiVi...

Disclaimer: I have it installed but have not used it yet, except for
testing to see if an .avi plays in preview mode (it does).
