Pulseaudio still buggy in Karmic

Try pavdevcontrol instead:
$ sudo apt-get install pavdevcontrol
You'll then find it in Applications|Sound...|PulseAudio Device Chooser.
Click on the applett that appears on your top panel & you'll find all of
the options, including volume.
