Offhand, I'd say it was due to posting in html. :)
Seriously (and you should avoid posting in html - set your mail client
to post plain text), what you observe is perfectly normal. Used memory
will include things like cache and disk buffers, plus the running
programs' text and data pages (that aren't paged out), plus some other
things. Since you have 16 gigs of RAM, your free pages may never go
close to zero, even though (ideally) they should. This is because
unused memory is wasted memory. It's just that a server with 16 gigs
of RAM may never come close to using that much RAM. But of course,
that depends on what you're doing at any given point of time.
It's definitely not a kernel bug nor a virus.
