Print to File settings

I've searched for the answer, but as yet was unable to find a 
satisfactory one, I'm afraid.

I would like to change the defaults for Print to File option - file type 
to pdf and output directory to [my_dir_name].
There's also a matter of page size - even though locale is UK, Print to 
File insists on US Letter size "paper" and doesn't give any option to 
change it.

I found one thread on Ubuntu forums and modified the FF about:config, 
including page height and width and directory name and type. 
Unfortunately it didn't have any effect on Print to File option - still 
getting default .ps file and location /user_name and the wrong page size.

There must be a simple enough way to change these defaults?
