Ok I'm sorry I'm still trying to learn can anyone please advise me as to 
why I got the following.
chris at chris-desktop:~$ apt-get update
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission 
denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory
chris at chris-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for chris: 
E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/httpp could not be found.
E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/httpp could not be found.
chris at chris-desktop:~$
