virtualbox wont show USB ports in the guest OS

Well, it's changed a lot since I actually worked on a USB driver, but at the 
time it was just a matter of the app that takes control of the device 
setting a flag in the device control block.  From the point of view of the 
host OS, the VirtualBox client grabbing a device is no different from 
letting your Host software do it.
