Also, are you running the version of the networkmanager that came with 
the Ubuntu Netbook Remix?  I tried the newer version on launchpad, and 
it didn't work with the modemmanager. I wound up uninstalling 
networkmanager and reinstalling the standard version. But you are 
finding modemmanager in Synaptic? It's all laid out at
