Yeah I could try lots of things, but that's not technically
acceptable ;-) If I use pppoeconfig and then find out later that it was
not the right thing, I will be left with config stuff hanging
around/polluting the system, not very elegant ;-)
I would rather understand/know what is needed exactly, and do that,
rather than shooting in the dark !

Oh, rest assured that I will definitely install (dual boot) Ubuntu on
my dad's machine ! :-)
It's just that I would love to have internet working on the same day I
am installing, so I can show him: "see it's easy, it DOES work just
fine !! " :o)

Yeah, if I don't get my anwsers, using a live session would indeed make
it harmless to fiddle with NM and pppoeconfig... good point.

Yep, 95% of his hard drive will be XP, and I will just put 15 GB for
Ubuntu. He will use XP most of the time, but at least now, he will have
Linux handy for when he gets curious, or when XP srews up and he needs
a dependable OS to get things done ;-)

I was hoping it would be like this. There is still a slim hope there it
works lije this, but from the quick look I had last sunday, my dad did
set up the username/PW using windows's connexion assistant, not by
configuring the modem itself. I did connect to the router (IP
10.0.0.138) and I remember seeing that one could set up the pasword to
protect the router itself (to keep strangers from screwing up the
router's configuration), but I can't remember seeing options to store
the username and PW needed when connecting to the net. It's possible I
missed it though, so crossing fingers ! :-)
Update: I just got an answer (10 minutes after posting, rock ! :-) on
the French Ubuntu Forum. They say to simply configure it via
pppoeconfig or the "DSL" tab in the NM applet ! Cool, simple then,
will play with that...
