downloading and installing ubuntu

I am trying to download and install ubuntu.  I tried reading the instructions, and though I was at least on the moderately computer saavy.  can someone please give me very very basic instructions on how to download the netbook remix and install it?  I have tried saving it directly to usb, then restarting my computer, pressing f9, andit says there is no os.....I understood and checked the hash, andit was ok.  it is just the how to save to flash.  I am wanting to totally rid myself of my windows xp system, as it has gotten some bad stuff in it.  I hear ubuntu is the only way to go.  Thank You in Advance!
