On 9.04, can and how do I get my update notification icon back?

Look for the package update-notifier . Is it installed?
$ aptitude search update-notifier
i update-notifier - Daemon which notifies about
i A update-notifier-common - Files shared between
the 'i' means it's installed. If you have a 'p' it means it's not
installed, but available.
install..
$ sudo aptitude install update-notifier
voilĂ
